PSG’s £57M Signing Reveals Reason for Tottenham, Newcastle Transfer Snub

On Tuesday, PSG officially announced the arrival of former Bournemouth defender Illia Zabarnyi. Moreover, the Ukraine international spoke to the club’s official website and revealed why the Parisians made sense as he sought a new challenge.

PSG had to beat other Premier League clubs to land Zabarnyi, so it wasn’t an easy-going transfer saga. Recently, L’Équipe reported that Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United remained in the mix for the player.

The French media outlet also revealed that both Premier League clubs are ready to meet Bournemouth’s demands immediately if Zabarnyi gave them the green light. Nonetheless, perhaps this interest gave PSG a sense of urgency to get a deal done, and they would.

Zabarnyi would complete his £57 million transfer to PSG andnow begins a new chapter in his career with the reigning UEFA Champions League winners.

Why did Illia Zabarnyi choose PSG?

In an interview with PSG’s official website, Zabarnyi was asked what made him decide on the capital club as he was fixed on heading to Paris despite interest from other Premier League clubs.

“I felt as though people wanted me to come here, and honestly, that really motivated me to do so as soon as possible,” Zabarnyi said. “In the end, that’s what happened. This is a new experience for me, and it’s amazing. I’m still young, so I need to try new things, which is why I think that this was the right decision.”
