Mayer may be closer to returning than people think.
Red Sox manager reveals promising news regarding rookie Marcelo Mayer's injury status originally appeared on The Sporting News
The Boston Red Sox have been hit with some injuries over the season, but were able to bounce back and contribute right away. Now, it seems like their most recent injury is also planning on making his return soon.
According to manager Alex Cora, Red Sox rookie Marcelo Mayer started up baseball activities yesterday, just playing catch (via Masslive). While it doesn’t seem like much, going from 10 days on the Injured List where he was just working out to baseball activities is a big step.
Mayer had the option of surgery, but decided to get a shot instead to reduce inflammation in his wrist, so he could come back to play, which the Sox definitely want since they have a chance to make the playoffs.
Mayer had an important role on the Sox, filling in for All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman during his injury. Then when Bregman returned, he shifted over to second base, a position that’s been needed since the time of Sox legend Dustin Pedroia.
During his time in the majors, Mayer has been struggling at the plate, batting .228/.272/.402/.674 with four homers. However, right before his injury he was putting it together, batting .296 in his last nine games.
Also in his absence, Ceddanne Rafaela has been playing more at second, taking him away from his natural position at center field, where he is a Gold Glove candidate. Hopefully, Mayer returns soon so Rafaela can go back and earn his first Gold Glove, and Mayer can help the team to the playoffs.
