THE SPORTING NEWS PRESEASON CLASS 2A TOP 10
No. 10 Cherokee
Jaxon Paulsrud had over 1,700 yards from scrimmage, showing off his skills as a passer and a runner. He is joined by Blake Lovell in a backfield that had 1,830 yards rushing on the year. Paulsrud is also a key defensive player back along with sophomore Mallon Malausky, who had 57 tackles, and Lovell, who had 48.5.
No. 9 PCM
The Mustangs have not had a losing season since 2014, going 19-4 the last two years. Gone, though, is 2,191-yard rusher Adrien Robbins and quarterback Gavin VanGorp, as players like Chase Wagaman, Shay Burns and Gavin Steenhoek will need to step up and replace all of that production.
No. 8 Grand View Christian
Making the move up from 1A will be the Thunder, who do so with elite quarterback Judah Lock. As a junior, Lock threw for over 2,000 yards and 19 touchdowns. Leading rusher Jake Albright and Colton Klouda will join him along with top prospect Brayden Hoben, who had 809 yards receiving. Hoben also had 78 tackles on defense with Albright and Luke Jordan back for the defense.
No. 7 Mid-Prairie
Led by running back Hudson Ehrenfelt, the Golden Hawks won seven games last season. Ehrenfelt rushed for 1,365 yards and scored 26 touchdowns, and could be counted on for more with an inexperienced QB taking over. Ehrenfelt is also a top returning receiver along with Kaden Kos, as Kos also anchors the defense after making 108.5 tackles with 22.5 for loss.

No. 6 Dike-New Hartford
Last year, Dike-New Hartford went 11-2 in 1A. Now, they are competing in 2A with some big holes to fill including top rusher Noah Borcherding. But there is something to having a winning pedigree, which the Wolverines do with winning at least six games each year since 2010.
No. 5 Osage
Along with being a premier wrestling school, the Green Devils are building something on the football field. They have now won 22 games over the last four years. Quarterback Quinn Street had over 1,000 yards passing and rushing with Brock Trees and Gavin Muller joining him in the backfield. Muller, a junior, is also the leading returning tackler after making 57.5 stops.
No. 4 Van Meter
The Bulldogs have won at least 10 games each of the past 10 seasons, going 10-2 a year ago. The bulk of the offensive production has moved on, leaving players like Tate Doggett, Jedidiah Hubbard and Henry Lounsbury left to pick up the slack and keep the tradition going.
No. 3 Central Lyon/George-Little Rock
After going 25-1 the two years before, the Lions slipped to 6-4. Jayden Daale gained valuable experience at QB, throwing for over 1,000 yards and rushing for 657 more. Leading rusher Michelet Sedam is also back after racking up 974 yards and 11 TDs. Jephte Raymond is one of the top returning tacklers.
No. 2 OABCIG
The Falcons make the move up from 1A to 2A with Jaxx DeJean leading the way. The brother of former Iowa Hawkeye standout and current Philadelphia Eagle defensive back Cooper DeJean, the younger DeJean is a super prospect. He caught 57 passes for 620 yards with 10 TDs last year, and is joined by JJ Parks and Jack Gilbert, who both had over 400 yards receiving. Top rusher Kade Spotts is also back, but QB Brysen Kolar has graduated. Will DeJean, who was 13 of 19 for 147 yards, fill the void?
No. 1 Carroll Kuemper
Brock Badding might be the best player in 2A, and he returns arguably one of the top weapons in Jarin Hoffman. Will it be enough for the Knights? Kuemper averaged 32 points per game, as Badding threw for 2,150 yards and 19 TDs while Hoffman ran for almost 1,300 and scored 17 times. Braxton Vonnahme and Griffin Glynn will be Badding’s top targets.
