FAMU basketball coach Charlie Ward hires Rob Lewis, Sebastian Aguilar to inaugural staff

FAMU basketball coach Charlie Ward hired Rob Lewis from East Carolina and Sebastian Aguilar from Florida State to his inaugural staff.

Charlie Ward’s inaugural Florida A&M basketball coaching staff is starting to fill out.

On Monday, July 7, the Rattlers’ newly appointed head coach hired Rob Lewis and Sebastian Aguilar to the coaching staff.

Lewis will serve as FAMU’s assistant coach, joining associate head coach Jarrod Lazarus on the bench. Lewis was previously East Carolina’s Director of Player Development.

He also spent 2022-2024 as a graduate assistant for former Florida State basketball coach Leonard Hamilton and was vital in Washington Wizards rookie and former Seminole Jamir Watkins’ development.

“We are excited to welcome Rob Lewis to our coaching staff,” Ward said in a released statement. “Rob brings a wealth of experience, a deep understanding of the game, and a passion for developing players both on and off the court. His leadership and energy will be a tremendous asset to our program.”

Aguilar is FAMU’s new director of basketball operations. Aguilar worked as a graduate assistant at FSU from 2023-2025, assisting with travel logistics, advanced statistics, and coordinating the annual Leonard Hamilton Basketball Camp.

Before FAMU and FSU, Aguilar was a student manager for St. Johns from 2021 to 2023 and worked with current NBA players Julian Champagnie and David Jones.

“We are thrilled to welcome Sebastian Aguilar as our new Director of Basketball Operations,” Ward said. “Sebastian brings exceptional organizational skills, a strong basketball IQ, and a dedication to excellence that will be vital to our program’s daily operations and long-term success. We look forward to the energy and insight he will bring to our team.”

Ward is entering his first season as FAMU men’s basketball coach after spending seven years as the boys’ basketball coach at Florida High School in Tallahassee. The 1993 Heisman and national championship quarterback at FSU and 11-year NBA veteran replaces Patrick Crarey II.

Crarey, now Grambling State’s head coach, led the Rattlers to a 14-17 record and their first Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament appearance since 2022 last season.
