The NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Watkins Glen was a ratings hit for The CW. On Tuesday, CW Sports announced the Watkins Glen race had a total of 1.096 million viewers. It was the most-watched Xfinity Series race from Watkins Glen since 2018.
CW Sports also announced the audience viewership for this year’s race was up 41 percent compared to last year, which aired on USA. Additionally, viewership peaked at 1.468 million viewers from 6:30-6:45 p.m. ET.
NASCAR fans saw Connor Zilisch win the Watkins Glen race and earn his sixth victory of the season. But fans also saw Zilisch fall off his car and suffer a broken collarbone.
On the Door Bumper Clear podcast, Zilisch revealed that he might need surgery for his injury. “I think it might be something that I might have to get surgery for,” Zilisch said. “But in this case, I think surgery is something that speeds up the process, so you can get plates and screws and get it reconstructed back together. Shane [van Gisbergen] talked about it — he had an injury in 2021 and broke his collarbone — he had plates, screws, everything done and he was racing back the next weekend. Thankfully, the collarbone is a relatively quick bone to fix and heal.”
More on the Watkins Glen Xfinity Series race and Connor Zilisch
Zilisch, 19, was likely on his way to winning an Xfinity Series championship, as he has won four of his last five races and has finished in the top five in his last 11 races. The Xfinity Series is off this week and will return to action on Aug. 22. It’s not clear when Zilisch will return to action, but Trackhouse Racing and Chevrolet are making sure that they make the right decision when it comes to Zilisch’s career.
“I think it’s a discussion that we all have to have. We haven’t really talked about much obviously since yesterday, but in the little bit that we’ve discussed in some of the quiet moments over the last 24 hours, it’s going to have to be a group decision,” Trackhouse owner Justin Marks said. “It’s going to have to be sponsors, Chevrolet, the team, taking care of his development, taking care of him as a human and as an athlete, and then keeping his motivations high and making sure he knows he’s got a group of people behind him that are supportive of him.”
