What can we expect from Texas’ redshirt freshmen?

The 2024 class came in ranked No. 6 in the nation. It brought names like Colin Simmons, Brandon Baker, Kobe Black, and Ryan Wingo, players who have already made varying levels of contributions for the Longhorns. But what about some of the names we didn't hear as much in 2024? Lets look to see what we can reasonably expect in their second season as a Longhorn.

Offense

Parker Livingstone, WR – Competing for a starting role on the outside, Livingstone has had a great fall camp. More from RT Young on Livingstone, who had a strong Saturday scrimmage.

Aaron Butler, WR – Currently on the outside looking in for the top four WR rotation, but he could find a way to more snaps in camp. Should factor on special teams.

Jordan Washington, TE – Is now up to above 260 lbs and is still moving well. Texas will look to use him in two TE sets along with Jack Endries, but he’s in a battle with Spencer Shannon.

Nate Kibble, iOL – Praised often for his behind the scenes work in 2024, will look to be a depth piece as a backup at guard and work to enter Kyle Flood‘s circle of trust.

Daniel Cruz, iOL – Currently behind Cole Hutson and Connor Robertson at center.

Christian Clark, RB – Coming off of injury, will be a part of Texas’ backfield rotation this fall. High hopes from the staff and others.

Trey Owens, QB – Competing for the backup QB role with Matthew Caldwell. Has strung together good practices in the past few days.

Defense

Xavier Filsaime, DB – Currently in a very deep safety room fighting to join the rotation, will assuredly be a part of the special teams efforts.

Zina Umeozulu, EDGE – Having a very strong camp, is looking to be a major part of Texas’ plans at Buck behind Colin Simmons. Part of a deep and talented room.

Wardell Mack, DB – Involved in the battle at Star with Graceson Littleton. Mack is a player who will see the field on defense and special teams this year.

Santana Wilson, DB – Is likely going to be on special teams and provide depth at corner.

Melvin Hills, DT – Similar to Wilson, he is working to be part of the playable depth at DT.

A handful of these players will either carve out a meaningful role in 2025 or be needed to step up in place of an injured teammate. Texas has a young and hungry team, and a significant reason behind that hunger is the amount of second-year players battling for meaningful roles alongside other classmates who did plenty last season.
