Birmingham City vs Ipswich Town sets the tone for the Championship season. Big night under the lights at St Andrew’s , Birmingham’s first chance to show off their new team to the home fans.

Ipswich come off the back of promotion last season. Kieran McKenna’s side has been quietly rebuilt over the summer and this is their chance to make an early statement.

These two teams have a Football League history but haven’t met much in recent times. Debutants, injuries and tactical changes will make for plenty to watch. Here’s everything you need to know, including how to watch and who’s starting.

Kick-Off Time

The match kicks off at 8:00 PM BST on Friday, August 8, 2025, at St Andrew’s Stadium. That’s 3:00 PM ET for US viewers and 12:00 PM PT on the West Coast.

Tom Brady's Birmingham FC return to St Andrew’s with a new team and the excitement of a new season. Big chance to get the fans onside early,  and for new boys like Tommy Doyle and Christoph Klarer to bed in quickly.

Ipswich have one of the tougher openers in the league but under McKenna they’ve developed a reputation for structured football — and they’ll need that discipline from the first whistle.

Starting Line-Ups for Birmingham City vs Ipswich Town

Birmingham are expected to go 4–3–3 with Ryan Allsop in goal. The back four should be Bright Osayi‑Samuel, Christoph Klarer, Phil Neumann, and Alex Cochrane. In midfield Tomoki Iwata, Seung‑ho Paik, and Tommy Doyle will form the central three. Demarai Gray, Keshi Anderson, and Jay Stansfield will lead the line.

New boy Marvin Ducksch is out with a calf injury but that means several debutants will get a chance to shine. How quickly the new midfield three can bed in will be the big test.

Ipswich Town will probably set up in their usual 4-2-3-1 formation. Alex Palmer in goal, Benjamin Johnson, Dara O'Shea, Jacob Greaves and Ashley Young as the back four. Azor Matusiwa and Jack Taylor will be the two in front of the defence, Jaden Philogene, Samuel Szmodics and Jack Clarke will play off George Hirst.

Town may be without Omari Hutchinson, even though he is still a possibility as a late decision. Jaden Philogene and Leif Davis are both 50/50, Connor Townsend is out with a knee injury. McKenna will need Szmodic and Hirst to provide that spark in the final third
