With Kyrie Irving sidelined until midseason, all eyes in Dallas turn to rookie sensation Cooper Flagg. Can the No. 1 pick form a dominant duo with Anthony Davis and keep the Mavericks in contention?
After the blockbuster trade that sent Luka Dončić to the Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis, the Dallas Mavericks found themselves entering a bold new era. The plan was clear — pair Davis with Kyrie Irving and build another championship-contending duo. But with Irving out until at least next year due to an ACL tear, the team’s immediate focus has shifted to the franchise’s newest cornerstone: Cooper Flagg.
Selected No. 1 overall in the 2025 NBA Draft, Flagg enters the league with sky-high expectations. A 6’9” two-way force with elite basketball IQ, Flagg brings energy, length, and versatility. He’s capable of playing multiple positions, defending at a high level, and spacing the floor — all of which should complement Anthony Davis perfectly.
Offensively, Flagg’s unselfish play and growing shooting range make him an ideal piece next to Davis, who thrives as a roller and post presence. Defensively, the duo could be elite. Flagg’s instincts and lateral quickness allow him to switch onto guards, while Davis remains one of the league’s best rim protectors. Together, they give head coach Jason Kidd a defensive pairing with tremendous upside.
Despite his injury, Kyrie Irving remains heavily involved with the team and has taken Flagg under his wing. “We are connected; he’s a Duke Blue Devil. I know he can deal with the pressure,” Kyrie said. He added, “The future is y’all’s,” showing confidence not only in Flagg but in the young core overall. Irving reportedly feels a strong sense of mentorship and is excited to guide Flagg through the challenges of the NBA.
Until Kyrie returns, Flagg will be expected to shoulder more responsibility as a secondary playmaker and scorer. If he and Davis can establish early chemistry, the Mavericks could remain competitive and build something special for the future — starting now.
