Azzi fumbles the pitch, Paige lands the punchline.
Paige Bueckers Left Disappointed by Azzi Fudd After Big Personal Moment originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Azzi Fudd can knock down threes from just about anywhere on the court, but throwing a baseball? That’s still a work in progress.
The UConn star and projected top WNBA Draft pick recently shared the story behind her ceremonial first pitch at a Washington Nationals game, and let’s just say it didn’t exactly go viral for the right reasons.
During the latest episode of her podcast "Fudd Around and Find Out," Fudd admitted the throw didn’t make it to the catcher. But the bigger reaction came later, when her girlfriend, fellow UConn legend Paige Bueckers, saw the real video.
“She was really disappointed that it hit the ground,” Fudd laughed. “She was like, ‘You know what, at least you’re pretty.’”
Azzi Fudd Opens Up About Her Throw and Paige’s Reaction
Fudd explained that she had never thrown a baseball before and was nervous about the entire experience.
In an effort to avoid embarrassment, her dad took her to Dick’s Sporting Goods the night before the game to practice in the parking lot. Despite the prep, the pitch still bounced before it reached the plate.
The internet didn’t seem to mind, especially given the flattering camera angle shared on social media. But Bueckers apparently got a better look at the full version.
The moment added to a growing list of lighthearted, public exchanges between the couple, who have become increasingly open about their relationship over the last year.
Could Azzi Fudd and Paige Bueckers Reunite in the WNBA?
There’s a chance this duo could be teammates again soon. The Dallas Wings currently sit at the bottom of the WNBA standings and are the odds-on favorites to land the No. 1 pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft.
With Bueckers already on the roster, Dallas could select Fudd and reunite the former UConn backcourt that helped define women’s college basketball over the past few years.
The WNBA hasn’t seen a pair of star college teammates reunite in this kind of spotlight in years. Both Fudd and Bueckers bring elite scoring, high IQ and fan engagement value that could transform the trajectory of a franchise overnight.
Fudd may still be learning how to throw a baseball, but when it comes to basketball, she and Bueckers continue to be one of the most watchable pairs in the sport.
