Philadelphia and its restricted free agent can't line up.
The Philadelphia 76ers and Quentin Grimes don't appear to be making any progress on contract negotiations.
Grimes is a restricted free agent, and he wants $25 million per year on his new contract.
But it's not a good time to be an RFA.
"Restricted free agency around the NBA remains ice cold," The Athletic's Anthony Slater writes.
Restricted free agents often get their value set by other teams. They can be given offer sheets, which their current team has the right to match.
But if the current team doesn't match, they can accept the offer sheet from elsewhere.
Other teams aren't handing out offer sheets to the likes of Grimes, Jonathan Kuminga or Josh Giddey, though. There's very little available cap space across the NBA, so there's nothing to be offered.

That leaves Grimes waiting for the 76ers to meet him somewhere in the middle. He proved he can be a high-end NBA player, shining while Philadelphia's stars were out last season.
But how much does a team pay after less than 30 games of that kind of production? It's a tough question, and apparently the 76ers think it's much less than $25 million per year.
If no other team steps in with an offer sheet, Grimes may have no choice but to settle.
