The Minnesota Twins shook up their roster this July, trading away 10 players, including star shortstop Carlos Correa.
Amid the chaos, many teammates waived their no-trade clauses or requested trades, seeking new opportunities elsewhere. But one key player remained a constant: Byron Buxton.
According to Dan Hayes of The Athletic, multiple teams—including the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets—expressed interest in acquiring the Twins’ two-time All-Star center fielder. Buxton’s representatives confirmed at least six teams contacted his agent, B.B. Abbott, about the possibility of waiving his no-trade clause.
Despite the interest, Buxton was unwavering.
“It’s always good to be wanted,” Buxton said. “Don’t get me wrong. But the only place I want is Minnesota. All of my choices are easy. I ain’t got but one place on my mind. That’s how it’ll be.”
Buxton also used his All-Star Game press conference on July 14 to send a clear message: he planned to stay with the Twins no matter what.
Club president Derek Falvey spoke with Buxton over the weekend after the flurry of trades. Falvey ensured he knew the Twins had not initiated any trade talks about him. Falvey also checked in on Buxton's well-being, knowing the veteran's energy and leadership are vital to the team's spirit.
“Nobody expected all the moves,” Buxton said. “But for me, I knew I ain’t going nowhere. It’s part of the process. Obviously, you don’t want that to be the case, but we’ve got a young group of guys where these last two months will be fun. We’ve just got to come out and play hard and play good baseball and see where it takes us.”
Buxton's steadfast loyalty amid uncertainty underscores why he remains the pulse of the Twins.
