Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors didn’t finish the season the way they had hoped. After trading for Jimmy Butler at the NBA trade deadline, the Warriors posted a 22-8 record from that point on, tied for the third-best in the league.
They knocked off the Houston Rockets as the No. 7 seed in the first round, but Curry suffered a hamstring injury in Game 1 of the second round. He went on to miss the remainder of the series, and without him, the Warriors lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games.
When Curry returns to the court next season for his 17th year in the NBA, he’ll no longer be teammates with Kevon Looney. The 6-foot-9 forward signed a two-year, $16 million deal with the New Orleans Pelicans last Monday.
On Sunday, Looney took to social media to say goodbye to the Warriors in a collaborative post with The Players’ Tribune.
"I’m Bay Area for life, no matter where I go," the caption of the post read.
Several hours later, Curry reposted it on his Instagram story, responding to Looney’s message with a note of his own.
"Forever a legend Toon!!!! '17 on the clock!'" Curry said.
Looney and Curry have been teammates since 2015 when the Warriors drafted the former UCLA Bruins forward with the 30th overall pick. They won three NBA titles together (2017, 2018, 2022).
Across 599 regular-season games with Golden State, Looney averaged 5.0 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.
