Josh Giddey rooted for Oklahoma City Thunder to win NBA championship: 'I love them.'
In a business where you can't hold grudges, Josh Giddey didn't spend his June hoping to see his former squad come up just short of a championship. The Oklahoma City Thunder captured the Larry O'Brien trophy and completed one of the greatest seasons ever.
Giddey could've easily rooted against the Thunder. You see it happen all the time. NBA divorces are ugly, with one side feeling bitter. But last year's rare player-for-player swap between Giddey and Alex Caruso has seen both sides enjoy the highs of the deal.
Caruso helped the Thunder win a championship by being a playoff riser. Meanwhile, Giddey is on the cusp of a payday after a rebound year on the Chicago Bulls. Still having several close relationships on OKC, the 22-year-old said he rooted for his old team to beat the Indiana Pacers.
"The next team I've watched the most is OKC," Giddey said on Ball Magnets. "I love them, and I'm so close with a lot of the guys there, so that's probably the main thing. I genuinely root for those guys and want them to win the championship."
Giddey could be this iteration's Jeff Green. Both ended up as the odd man out, but went on to have fruitful NBA careers at multiple stops. He wasn't going to get the primary ball-handler role in OKC anymore because of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams, but he has taken advantage of it in Chicago.
