West Virginia added a key piece to the basketball roster earlier this offseason with the addition of Chance Moore, but he required a waiver in order to suit up this year.
Moore started his career at Arkansas, where he spent just one season but appeared in only five games in the process. He then transferred to Missouri State, where he averaged over 10 points per game in each of his two seasons with the Bears.
The Georgia native then transferred to St. Bonaventure, where he had his best campaign to date with 13.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.3 steals while starting 31 of 32 games played.
After entering the transfer portal once again, Moore took an official visit to West Virginia and committed to head coach Ross Hodge at the end of the trip. The versatile 6-foot-5 option was expected to be a major piece to the puzzle but first was the hurdle of a waiver.
It’s a situation that Hodge had dealt with before in his career but each are individually based.
Still, with the information that West Virginia had one more they believed that they were confident that this would be a positive result for all involved.
“We felt like he had a very strong case. Our compliance office worked really hard at it as well,” he said. “And it’s not always the case but sometimes there are like really, really gray areas that you leave up to chance. But with this situation we felt pretty confident.”
That’s because the Mountaineers were able to show what happened and had the supporting materials and documents. And the end result was exactly as the coaches expected as Moore was approved for the waiver, although he is required to sit out the first five games of the season.
Moore gives the Mountaineers a highly versatile forward that can put the ball on the floor and pressure the rim. He also is able to rebound the ball effectively and has the positional flexibility to guard multiple stops.
And with him on the floor, that’s a major boost for the Mountaineers.
“And we felt strongly all along that’s what would happen,” Hodge said.
