Not everyone supports the Mets' recent trade deadline strategy.
Former MLB GM Jim Bowden Slams Mets for Tyler Rogers Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Any doubts about the New York Mets staying quiet ahead of the July 31 trade deadline ended long before the clock hit triple zeroes.
The Mets turned heads with their many trades last week, notably acquiring Baltimore Orioles outfielder Cedric Mullins and St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley. However, it was another move that left longtime MLB executive Jim Bowden quite confused.
In a post-trade deadline superlatives piece published on Monday, Bowden accused the Mets of giving up too much for San Francisco Giants reliever Tyler Rogers. The Mets sent pitching prospect Blade Tidwell, promising young outfielder Drew Gilbert, and reliever José Buttó to the Giants.
“Trading three future major-league players ... for a two-month rental seemed like an overpay, especially if Gilbert develops into an everyday player,” Bowden wrote. “I thought dealing two of those three for Rogers would have been fair.”
Fittingly, Buttó and Rogers debuted against their previous employers this past weekend. Buttó recorded 2 1/3 scoreless innings for the Giants, and Rogers threw a scoreless seventh inning in Saturday’s 12-6 Mets win.
We don’t entirely disagree with Bowden, especially considering that Rogers is a 34-year-old pending free agent. Yes, Rogers has a 2.74 ERA over 352 innings since the start of 2021, but is that enough to justify trading three young players?
Then again, we’re sure that Mets fans will be fine with the trade if the end result is a World Series title. The 63-49 Mets enter Monday half a game out of first place in the NL East, though they hold the NL’s second Wild Card spot.
