The readers have spoken and selected the Holland Sentinel Boys Athlete of the Year.
West Ottawa's Blayton Guy was voted Holland Sentinel Boys Athlete of the Year by the readers.
Guy, a senior rugby player, earned 13,089 votes, 58% over the overall votes.
The poll considering the top boys high school athletes was open from June 19 to Aug. 1.
"When I think about this season I think about all the fun we had. From fun at practice to our team dinners," Guy said. " You could lock all of us in an empty room and we would still have a good time. We’ve got a great group of guys this year. I met most of my best friends on this team. Sure, making it to the state final is cool, but the fun truly was in the process.
"I hope that I never forget these boys."
Guy led the Panthers to the state championship rugby match, the first time West Ottawa has reached the finals in a decade.
"He over came a major injury his sophomore year," West Ottawa coach Garrett Daniel said. "He has one of the greatest passions for rugby that I've ever seen. Every team knew they needed to target him, yet he still found ways to make plays. One of the greatest captains I've coached. The other players love and respect him."
West Ottawa hockey player Krue Anderson finished second with 3,244 votes and Zeeland East basketball player BJ Walker was third with 2,077 votes.
Anderson was the Holland Sentinel Hockey Player of the Year and Walker was the Basketball Player of the Year. He will play at Grand Valley State this year.
