The New York Mets are locked in a tight race for first place in the NL East with division rival Philadelphia Phillies, with both teams currently tied atop the standings—making every game down the stretch increasingly critical.
Unfortunately for the Mets, they dropped their weekend series against the San Francisco Giants on Sunday, and the offense didn’t have much of a chance due to the struggles of right-handed starter Frankie Montas.
Montas’ rough season continued as the 32-year-old allowed seven hits, seven earned runs, and two walks in the loss, with the Mets ultimately falling 12–4.
Over six starts in 2025, Montas owns a 3–1 record but carries an inflated 5.46 ERA after returning from a high-grade right lat strain that sidelined him for a significant portion of the season.
Mets Manager Sends Strong Message After Frankie Montas Meltdown
Montas joined the Mets in December 2024 as part of a flurry of moves to strengthen the rotation and add depth, signing a two-year, $34 million contract that includes a player opt-out clause after the 2025 season.
When asked if Montas’ role is up for discussion, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza responded, “We just got done with a game here. He’s got to be better. He knows that.”

Mets Fans React to Mendoza’s Comments
Mets fans responded to Mendoza's strong postgame comments on X.
A fan said, "Love it. Immediate accountability. No promises. You can not pitch like that and have your job assured. Good [expletive]."
"‘We just got done with the game.’ This tells me changes are going to happen," wrote another.
One fan added, "He will not be making his next start."
"Even Mendy wants him gone lol," said a fan.
One more wrote, "Didn't say no."
Mets Must Weigh Options for Struggling Starter
Given that Montas is earning $17 million this season and is likely to opt into the second year of his deal, he’s an unlikely candidate to be designated for assignment. A more realistic option—and one many Mets fans are calling for—is a move to the bullpen in hopes of helping him rediscover the form he showed earlier in his career.
Montas has spent ten seasons in MLB, with his best stretch coming during his six-year tenure with the Oakland Athletics. He posted a 3.70 ERA, a 35–30 record over 89 starts and finished sixth in AL Cy Young voting in 2021.
Since then, however, he has struggled to find consistency over the past three seasons, making starts for the New York Yankees, Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Brewers and now the Mets.
