The Louisiana high school football season is about a month away from kicking off and there’s going to be plenty of games fans should have their eyes on for 2025.

Several of the top football programs in the Southeast reside of out Louisiana, including Edna Karr, and they’ll be facing elite out-of-state and in-state competition. Which games should folks be looking to gas up, eat a plate of jambalaya and head on over to?

When it comes to the top Louisiana high school football matchups, we plucked out 10 of ’em for you ahead of the 2025 season:

1. American Heritage (Fla.) at Edna Karr, Sep. 12

This one seems like a no brainer to place at the top of our list because these two programs are nationally ranked and this will be the game to see in New Orleans come mid-September. Edna Karr is coming off winning a Louisiana Division 1-Select state championship and going 14-0 against a American Heritage team that won it all in Florida’s Class 4A classification. The Patriots feature 5-star Texas commit Dia Bell at quarterback, which should pose the toughest test for the Cougars’ defense all season long.

2. St. Augustine at John Curtis, Nov. 7

The last three meetings have been decided by one touchdown and there’s little reason to believe this year’s edition will be any different. On the last day of the regular season in 2024, St. Augustine pulled off a thrilling, 28-20, victory over John Curtis. Now with both teams preparing for another run towards winning an elusive state championship, this game is always front and center whenever, wherever it’s played.

3. Edna Karr at Jesuit, Oct. 17

We do feel like this game might’ve lost a little bit of its luster when elite 5-star defensive edge rusher Zyron Forstall transferred to IMG Academy. Nonetheless, this meeting was arguably the Cougars’ toughest regular season challenge of 2024, with Edna Karr pulling away with a 21-9 victory. With the game being at Jesuit’s place and an expected strong contingent of fans rolling out for this game, expect another good one between the Cougars and Blue Jays.

4. Zachary at Catholic, Nov. 6

Whenever two teams can combine for 128 points, you want to see what they can see as an encore to that. The two Louisiana high school football powerhouses meet at the end of the season and honestly should be the best regular season finale. Catholic totaled over 500 yards of offense and eight touchdowns to upend Zachary, 73-55, in 2024. The 2023 edition went to overtime, with the Bears edging the Broncos, 35-28. The reasons keep piling up on why this one should be anything but cinema.

5. Ruston at Acadiana, Sep. 5

Another solid regular season opener is when Ruston travels into Alexandria. In the Week 1 matchup a year ago, Ruston received a huge night from quarterback Josh Brantley, who accounted for over 300 yards, four touchdowns in a 35-27 win over Acadiana. Now with both teams breaking in new signal callers this season, expect balanced offensive attacks.

6. Midland Legacy (Texas) at Ruston, Sep. 25

The Bearcats welcome in a team out of the Lone Star State for what should make for one of the top first half of the season tilts. Midland Legacy finished 6-6 in 2024, reaching the Class 6A, Division 1 playoffs and exiting in the second round. The Rebels return quarterback Josh Reyes, who threw for 2,229 yards, 27 touchdowns last year.

7. Archbishop Rummel at John Curtis, Sep. 26

Making the list for the second time is John Curtis as they welcome into town Archbishop Rummel in a contest that came down to the wire in 2024. The two teams combined for just over 300 yards offensively in a defensive slugfest, with Rummel coming away with the narrow 14-7 victory. When these two teams collide, expect another defensive battle between the Patriots and Raiders.

8. St. Thomas More at Catholic, Sep. 12

Week 2 will be full of strong Louisiana high school football matchups and looking at this particular contest, if it’s anything like last year’s, it could be right up there with the best of ’em. Catholic went on the road and snuck away with an 18-14 victory over St. Thomas More. We don’t see any reason why another memorable meeting between the two foes won’t come down to a fourth quarter scrum to the finish.

9. Opelousas at Alexandria, Sep. 26

Opelousas entered halftime of last year’s meeting with Alexandria feeling pretty food about their chances up 26-14. The Tigers would see that lead evaporate and turn into a 43-40 loss to the Trojans, which has us listing this game because of the unpredictability this one brings. Alexandria had to hold on in the fourth quarter, which saw the teams combine for 29 total points alone. We can see a lot of points and another nail biter this fall between the two.

10. John Curtis at Jesuit, Oct. 24

Jesuit gets another home game that cracks our list as they face one of the state’s storied programs in the Patriots. John Curtis holds a 11-4 all-time series lead over Jesuit, adding to their total last year when they defeated the Blue Jays, 17-10. Both programs are slated to be among the state’s best and whenever the clash, it makes for some pretty good Louisiana high school football.
