With the WNBA trade deadline drawing near (Aug 7), the teams preparing for deep playoff runs continue to be active in the open market.

While several teams across the league have made significant changes to their rosters, such as the Indiana Fever and Phoenix Mercury, others have been relatively quiet. One of the relatively quiet ones, the Dallas Wings, have spent most of the season near the bottom of the standings. Outside of acquiring center Li Yueru from Seattle for a pair of lower-round draft picks in early June, Dallas has done little major surgery in the first year of their rebuild.

On Sunday, that changed.

Dallas made a splash move, trading guard DiJonai Carrington to the Minnesota Lynx for Diamond Miller, Karlie Samuelson and a 2027 second-round pick.

The move by Dallas comes days after losing 88-78 to the Indiana Fever without Caitlin Clark. Against Indiana, Carrington posted four points, three rebounds and one assist in her final game as a Dallas Wing. Paige Bueckers led the show for Dallas, tallying 22 points, four rebounds and four assists.

Carrington, a second-round pick of the Connecticut Sun in the 2021 WNBA Draft, averaged 10.4 and 5.1 rebounds in 20 games for the Wings.

Carrington had fallen out of favor and the starting lineup in Dallas in what has been a subpar season offensively. The veteran was named the league's Most Improved Player and to the All-Defensive first team last season. She also finished fourth in the league's Defensive Player of the Year balloting.

The Wings received two role players from the Lynx (24-5), who have the best record in the WNBA. In 25 games, Miller, a forward, has averaged 4.1 points per game. She has hit 14 of her 26 3-point attempts (53.8%). Samuelson, a guard, averaged 3.3 points per game before suffering a season-ending foot injury during a game on June 29.

The Indiana Fever are focused on the return of Caitlin Clark, who has missed more than half of the season due to injuries, ahead of the postseason. With Sunday's trade, Dallas shifts its focus to future seasons while Minnesota attempts to win it all this year.
