Derrick Johnson is a distinguished individual. Along with being a college football hall of famer, winning the Nagurski and Butkus Awards and becoming the Kansas City Chiefs all time leading tackler, he can now add author to his resume. DJ teamed up with his wife Brittni to bring an inspiring children’s book to life.
Super DJ Saves Field Day is the Johnsons’ debut picture book and it’s got the passion, enthusiasm and hope that Johnson, one of the greatest players to ever wear burnt orange is known for. The book contains energy, heart and a message that goes way beyond winning. The story follows a dad turned superhero who shows up on Field Day to remind kids that their best effort is more powerful than any prize. The theme is simple and strong: “Try your best to be your best.”
It’s also a natural extension of the work Derrick has done through his Defend the Dream Foundation, which has renovated school libraries across Texas and Kansas City. The book is filled with characters who reflect the kids he’s trying to reach—students in Title I schools, many of whom rarely see themselves in the stories they read. That’s intentional. So is the focus on courage, kindness and facing challenges head on.
Brittni, a mom of six and co-author, said they wrote this story with their own family in mind. It shows. There’s joy on every page and it feels like the kind of book a parent would actually want to read out loud again and again.
Super DJ Saves Field Day is available on Amazon. For families, classroom and kids who love sports and the Longhorns, it’s a must-have.
