The staff and players are, obviously, tuned in to who is performing well in practice and is positioning himself to have a big season.

Meeting with the media on Monday, U-M defensive lineman TJ Guy, a breakout player in his own right, was asked to identify one player on both sides of the ball who is in the best position to have a breakout season that isn’t being discussed enough.

Here’s what he had to say.

On defense

Guy’s first response was on his side of the ball, as he identified Jyaire Hill as a player who has made improvements in the offseason and is having a good start to fall camp.

The Wolverines are hoping his upward trajectory continues, as Hill has big shoes to fill with the departure of Will Johnson.

“I’ll say Sugar Hill,” Guy said. “He looks way more locked in. He’s making plays out there. He’s going to be a different guy this year for sure. So him on defense.”

On offense

On the offensive side, Guy doesn’t have to look very far to identify one player who is holding his own against a very deep defensive front.

Guy suggests that Andrew Sprague has made improvements and could be in line for a starting spot on the line this season.

“I’m going to say Andrew Sprague,” Guy said. “I think he’s going to be a problem for real. He’s big as hell. Kind of makes everything look the same, I feel like. But, yeah, he’s a great player. I feel like him getting thrown in the fire in the bowl game was pretty good for him. So it just boosts his career, you know?”
