Luka Doncic’s future with the Los Angeles Lakers had been one of the biggest stories of the summer. The All-NBA guard was traded from the Dallas Mavericks to Los Angeles in February, and has quickly become the face of the franchise.
The Slovenian superstar had been due for an extension on August 2 and throughout the offseason, many wondered what his contract situation would look like – whether he’d commit long-term to the franchise or test free agency next year. On Saturday, however, all the speculation surrounding Doncic’s extension with the Lakers was finally put to bed via a report by ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Luka Doncic Signs Extension to Stay With the Lakers
According to Charania, Luka Doncic has signed a three-year, $165 million contract extension with the Lakers. The deal includes a player option in 2028 and officially removes him from next summer’s free agent class. More importantly, it positions Doncic to become eligible for a projected five-year, $417 million supermax contract in 2028–potentially the largest in NBA history.
Following the news, Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka made a promise to the fans via an official statement:
“Today is a monumental moment for our franchise,” Pelinka said. “Luka Doncic’s future is with the Los Angeles Lakers. Luka is one of the game’s most transcendent players… and above all else, Luka will lead our franchise to pursue future championships, a goal that will forever define the Lakers.”

Lakers Fans Want Trades to Happen
While Lakers fans are excited for his longterm future in LA, his decision to extend has also upped the urgency for Pelinka to bolster the roster around the Slovenian superstar.
"Rob really gonna ruin his prime man," one wrote shortly after the news.
"Luka and LeBron locked in while Pelinka playing golf," said another.
"Tell Rob to get his [expletive] to work," said another.
"Pelinka get your [expletive] to work," one added.
