Griner’s July 4 tribute to wife Cherelle.
Brittney Griner Sends Heartfelt Message to Wife Cherelle Griner on Friday originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Brittney Griner has been a great addition to the Atlanta Dream roster this season. Under Karl Smesko's system, she plays the role of defense as well as offense in the paint. The 6-foot-9 center averaged 9.9 points, 5.5 rebounds and 0.9 assists in the regular season as of yet.
On Friday, July 4, Griner paused from basketball to publicly honor her wife, Cherelle Griner, who turned 33. She shared a heartfelt birthday message.
“Happy Birthday my love, without this day I don’t get the love of my life," she posted on Threads. "I pray that this next year of your life is full of joy and happiness, accomplishments and satisfaction. You deserve the world and ima make sure you get it. Happy 33rd Baby!”
After meeting at Baylor, they became engaged in August 2018 and married in June 2019. Their union weathered Griner’s 10‑month detainment in Russia in 2022, during which Cherelle was an outspoken advocate for her release.
Her contribution was immense in campaigning for the safe return of Griner to America.
After her return to America, Griner posted an equally emotional message on Cherelle's birthday back in 2023.
"I'm grateful that on this day @cherelletgriner was brought into this world," she posted. "Without her I wouldn’t have found my person I wouldn’t know what love is and I for sure would feel alone in this world if you weren’t here."
"I love you baby with my whole heart. I hope in this next year of your life there is nothing but joy, happiness, and no dark days my love. Your truly the most perfect woman on this planet and I’m lucky enough to be here by your side." Griner added.
