Borussia Dortmund have received substantial income from their participation at the FIFA Club World Cup and the reported €65m transfer fee received from Chelsea for Jamie Gittens, but the club’s managing director, Lars Ricken, doesn’t expect a large outlay in transfer fees this summer.
Speaking about the club’s transfer strategy, Ricken exclusively told Ruhr Nachrichten: “We signed Jobe Bellingham for €30m. Yan Couto is now a permanent member of our team after his loan, which also involved a substantial sum. We paid a further €7m to sign Daniel Svensson on a permanent basis.
“We can’t and don’t want to allow ourselves a large transfer deficit like last year every year. The sporting management is also convinced that no major overhaul is necessary. And generally, we don’t feel like we have too few players in the squad.”
Analysing Borussia Dortmund’s transfer business
Already this season Borussia Dortmund have spent €57.25m on arrivals, while the departure of Gittens to Chelsea should see the club receive around €70.3m when you take into account the sale of Youssoufa Moukoko. It will leave die Schwarzgelben in the green should there be no further dealings.
Compared to last season, Dortmund spent €90m and only brought in €58m to the club. The sale of Jude Bellingham to Real Madrid for €113m in 2023 has offset the figures given that Dortmund spent €68m in the 2023/24 season, but with large outlays for Sebastien Haller (€31m), Karim Adeyemi (€30m) and Nico Schlotterbeck (€20m), Dortmund were around €20m in the red for the 2022/23 season.
