The New York Yankees received positive news Sunday about the awaited return of one of their talented pitchers.

New York's rotation has dealt with injury after injury this season, with some pitchers like Gerrit Cole never even touching the field this season. The players who have had to step up for the team have performed well, helping lead the team to its 60-51 record, but it seems the wait is over for one player's return.

Reigning American League Rookie of the Year Luis Gil is set to make his season debut after being activated off the injured list, according to MLB.com's Bryan Hoch.

"Nearly a full year after becoming the first Yankees pitcher to win the American League’s Rookie of the Year Award since Dave Righetti in 1981, Gil is ready to get back on the mound in a Major League game, set to make his season debut Sunday against the Marlins," Hoch wrote. "He was officially reinstated from the 60-day injured list Sunday morning, with Jonathan Loáisiga placed on the 15-day IL (retroactive to Saturday) with right mid back tightness."

"Gil has been out of action since Feb. 28, when he cut a bullpen session short after just five pitches at the Yankees’ Spring Training complex in Tampa, Fla. An MRI revealed a high-grade right lat strain that the team initially said would keep Gil from throwing for at least six weeks."

Gil had a standout rookie season, going 15-7 in 29 starts with a 3.50 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 151.2 innings pitched. The 27-year-old pitcher struck out 171 batters and was set to make a major impact on the Yankees' rotation before getting injured. Gil's return is sure to help boost New York's pitching down the stretch.
