El Paso Locomotive FC scored a record number of goals in a rout of Las Vegas Lights at Southwest University Park.
The El Paso Locomotive FC scored and scored and scored and kept scoring in a record-bursting 6-0 rout of the Las Vegas Lights on Saturday, Aug. 2, at Southwest University Park.
The stellar night of soccer set the record for most goals scored in a game by the Locomotive in club history and largest margin of victory.
The historic win was also the largest margin of victory for El Paso head coach Wilmer Cabrera in his professional career.
In the 18th minute, Locomotive forward Amando Moreno (10) made the first goal of the night, sending the crowd into a frenzy as the scoring train began rolling.
Goals followed by Alvaro Quezada (39 minute), two goals by Eric Calvillo (52 minute and 74 minute), Beto Avila (62 minute) and Emiliano Rodríguez (89 minute).
The last match between the two teams on May 24 at the Cashman Complex in Las Vegas left the Locomotive with a 2-1 win. The Locomotive entered the game with a 6-5-5 record compared with the 5-3-9 record of the Lights.
'Scouts Night'
The Locomotive game was celebrating "Back to School Night" and "Scouts Night."
Scouting America in El Paso honored "Scouts Night" by taking part in the presentation of the U.S. flag for the national anthem.
For seasoned scout Michael Ocon, holding the flag was nothing new. Ocon has been a scout for 10 years, and has been carrying the flag at both Chihuahuas and Locomotives games.
"Carrying the flag ... it has always been very fun," Ocon said. "Getting to carry the flag with the music playing and all that, and being on the field."
In addition to it being "Scouts Night," it was also "Back to School Night." Teachers, accompanied by El Paso Mayor Renard Johnson, got the honor of pulling the train horn at the start of the game.
Soccer is a family tradition
Eric Rodriguez brought his young son, Santos Rodriguez to his third Locomotive game. Ever since Santos showed an interest in soccer, the family has been attending Locomotive matches.
"We started coming a lot more frequently once he joined the Lil' Locos, so it's like a 4-and-under team the Locomotives have," Eric Rodriguez said. "He just became an instant fan."
For Brianna Saucedo, this was her first time attending a Locomotive game. In the past, she has gone to El Paso Chihuahuas baseball games at Southwest University Park and was looking forward to seeing the difference.
"It's cool, the atmosphere looks cool, the vibe seems different, so I'm excited to see the difference between here and the Chihuahuas," Saucedo said.
The El Paso Locomotive's next home game will be on Aug. 16 against Monterey Bay FC.
