Olympique Marseille have agreed a deal to sign American international Timothy Weah from Juventus, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

After a period of uncertainty and stalled negotiations during which Weah’s agent criticised a Juventus director for obstructing the move, a breakthrough has been reached.

Marseille will pay a €1 million loan fee and are obliged to sign Weah for €14m plus €3m in add-ons at the end of the season, while Juventus will retain a sell-on clause.

Weah’s initial loan approach by Marseille was rejected by Juventus, who insisted on a permanent transfer with three years left on his contract.

With Juventus keen to offload players surplus to requirements, Weah’s desire for regular playing time and a fresh start prompted a need for him to leave Turin.

He was previously courted by Nottingham Forest but opted against joining them, much to the frustration of the Juventus hierarchy.

A move to the Orange Velodrome will allow Weah to follow in his father’s footsteps, as George Weah represented Marseille in the 2000/01 season.

Weah’s impending arrival continues what has been a busy summer for Marseille. They have made eight new signings ahead of a return to the Champions League.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side drew the curtain on pre-season with a 1-1 stalemate against La Liga outfit Sevilla.

They will now put the finishing touches on their preparations for the new campaign before next Friday’s opening fixture against Stade Rennais.
