The Seattle Mariners got what they wanted ahead of the trade deadline, as they erased the regretful memory of the 2023 trade that sent Eugenio Suarez to the Arizona Diamondbacks by acquiring him again on Wednesday. He will be making $15 million in 2025 and will be a free agent after the season.
A day before the 2025 MLB trade deadline, the Mariners reunited with the third baseman, sending three prospects in infielder/designated hitter Tyler Locklear and pitchers Hunter Cranton and Juan Burgos.
On Thursday, Suarez made his first appearance in a game since the trade from the Diamondbacks, and helped the Mariners get past the Texas Rangers via a 6-0 score.
Eugenio Suarez feels the connection with fans right away in Seattle return
Suarez, who turned 34 years old on July 18, produced right away for the Mariners. Although he struck out in his first at-bat in the second inning versus the Rangers, Suarez had a double in the fourth frame before scoring the game's first run on a wild pitch by Texas starter Kumar Rocker.
Cole Young and Cal Raleigh added more to the Mariners' offense later on with home runs, as Seattle dominated the Rangers in a series opener at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, a familiar place for Suarez.
The powerful Suarez played two seasons (2022-2023) during his first stint with the Mariners, and during that time, he slashed .234/.327/.423 with 53 home runs and drove 183 runs in 312 games.
Seattle sent him to the Diamondbacks in November of 2023 for Carlos Vargas and Seby Zavala.
Nearly two years later, Suarez is back in Seattle, playing in front of fans, who cheered his comeback on Thursday.
"I feel the love and appreciate that so much," Suarez said after the Rangers game, per Adam Jude of The Seattle Times. "That was a lot for me and my wife and my daughters, and it feels like I never left."
Mariners stay in the hunt for an MLB playoff spot
With their win over Texas, the Mariners improved to 58-52 and gained solo share of the third spot in the Wild Card race in the American League. They are still in a precarious spot, though, as they are just a game ahead of the Rangers in the Wild Card positioning in the AL.
Moreover, Seattle is 4.5 games out of first place in the AL West, with the Houston Astros atop with a 62-47 record.
