The New York Yankees are looking to bolster their rotation in an attempt to return to the postseason after reaching the World Series in 2024.
The organization has primarily been linked to Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara. Alcantara was traded once before, sent to Miami by the St. Louis Cardinals in December 2017 as part of a larger deal in exchange for outfielder Marcell Ozuna.
The 29-year-old right-hander has spent the last seven seasons in Miami, collecting two All-Star selections and the 2022 NL Cy Young Award. That year he posted a 2.28 ERA, struck out 207 batters and finished with a 14-9 record.
Alcantara missed the 2024 MLB season due to Tommy John surgery on his right elbow after experiencing discomfort during a game in September 2023.
Alcantara has struggled so far in 2025 posting a 6.36 ERA over 109 innings for the Marlins, but New York hopes he can return to All-Star form if he ends up in the Bronx. Unfortunately, the Marlins are asking for top prospect Spencer Jones in any deal for Alcantara.
"Sources: The Marlins and Yankees have had dialogue about either Sandy Alcántara or Edward Cabrera going to the Bronx. The Marlins have asked for Spencer Jones (1.115 OPS in the minors this season) as different concepts have been discussed."

New York has been adamant that Jones only moves as part of a package for Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes, who is considered untouchable this deadline, via Jon Heyman. Jones was selected in the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft by the Yankees and has quickly risen through the minor-league system.
The 24-year-old appears MLB-ready, dominating at Triple-A over 21 games with a .402 batting average, 1.381 OPS and 13 home runs.
