‘The best footballing team in the Netherlands after PSV’: Erik ten Hag’s future employers FC Twente in with a chance of a top two Eredivisie finish

On this week’s episode of ESPN’s Voetbalpraat, Anco Jansen was full of praise for FC Twente. He said ‘I think they’re the best footballing team in the Netherlands after PSV, and have been for quite some time‘. With Feyenoord and Ajax showing signs of inconsistency, and NEC Nijmegen also somewhat out of form, Twente could, according to Jansen, finish in the top two.

This will be music to the ears of Erik ten Hag, who is set to take over as Sporting Director of the Enschede club in the summer. Suddenly having guaranteed European football would certainly help him put together a squad that lost its best player, Sem Steijn, to Feyenoord in the summer. FC Twente are currently fifth in the Eredivisie, two points behind NEC in fourth and three behind Ajax in third. In order to catch Feyenoord, they will need to overturn a seven point gap within the remaining nine matches. This may be too much of an ask for John van den Brom and his side. However, their 2-0 victory over the Rotterdam based side last time out will certainly have helped.

FC Twente do have a decent run of fixtures to come, and will have chances to take points off of Ajax and NEC before the end of the regular season. Van den Brom has done a decent job since taking over, with the former Antwerp head coach having only lost one game so far, with 10 draws and nine wins. Twente finished third a few seasons ago under Joseph Oosting and will be hoping that Van den Brom can steer them out of the play-offs and into the top four, avoiding that battle for the final European ticket.
