Manchester United are looking ahead to a vital summer after an impressive rise in 2026. The recent 2-1 loss to Newcastle United was the Red Devils’ first league defeat this year in ten games, which include six wins and three draws.

All of these victories have come under caretaker manager Michael Carrick, who took charge in mid-January and has propelled the club to third place in the league. United are now fighting to finish within the top four in the Premier League, which will guarantee automatic qualification to the Champions League.

The English giants are desperate to return to the premier European club competition, which would be a boost to their finances ahead of a key summer transfer window. The Red Devils are likely to invest heavily in midfield to address Casemiro’s impending departure.

However, a new left-back could also be on the agenda, with Luke Shaw set to turn 31 this summer and out of contract next year. A previous report relayed by The Peoples Person states that United have their eyes on the fiery Federico Dimarco to address the issue.

Best full-back in the world this season?

Dimarco’s ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch could make him a stellar replacement for Shaw. His arrival could also help with the development of Patrice Dorgu and Diego Leon, both of whom are highly rated at Old Trafford.

The Italian represents an established upgrade on the duo, given that he is already one of the best full-backs in the world. Dimarco has registered seven goals and 15 assists in 35 games across all competitions for Inter Milan this season.

The Italian is just one short of Alejandro Gomez’s record of 16 Serie A assists, the most in a single season in the top tier of Italian football, set in the 2019/20 season. United are understandably enticed by the 28 year old’s abilities, but it now appears that their bitter rivals are already working to win the race for his signature.

Liverpool eyeing Dimarco

According to SPORTSBOOM, Liverpool have identified Dimarco as a possible replacement for Andy Robertson. United and Arsenal are also mentioned as suitors, although the player is not their priority yet. The report states:

“While Manchester United and Arsenal are closely monitoring Dimarco’s situation, their interest is not currently classified as ‘high priority.’ Although scouting reports are being updated regularly, neither club is preparing a concrete bid for this summer; instead, they are observing the player’s development and any potential ‘departure signals’ from a distance.”

“The scenario at Liverpool could prove more critical. Should Andrew Robertson depart or be phased out of the starting XI, it is rumoured that the Reds could make Dimarco their “primary move” for the left-back position. The Anfield hierarchy views the Italian international as the only profile capable of replicating Robertson’s offensive threat.”

The report adds that the Merseyside club see Dimarco as an upgrade on Milos Kerkez, who was brought in to replace Robertson last summer but has failed to live up to expectations. It is believed that the Italian’s suitors will have to offer at least €75–€80 million to convince the Nerazzurri, but even that may not be enough.

Dimarco’s contract expires in 2027, but both parties are relaxed about the situation, with the Serie A giants expected to hand him a new deal until 2030 with a significant raise. The player has no desire to leave San Siro, while Inter Milan also consider him an integral part of their plans.

Final Thoughts

While Dimarco could be a fantastic replacement for Shaw, it appears that he is unlikely to leave the Nerazzurri any time soon. It is also unclear whether the Italian could maintain his high standards in the English league, so United, perhaps, would be better advised to stick to their recent strategy of signing Premier League-proven players.
