What Wisconsin coach Greg Gard said about Nolan Winter’s injury vs Maryland

Nolan Winter went down with an injury in the second half against Maryland. He was helped off the court without putting any weight on his left leg.

MADISON – Wisconsin forward Nolan Winter hopefully “avoided the worst” with his injury that sidelined in the second half against Maryland, head coach Greg Gard said in his postgame press conference.

“We’ll see where everything with the testing and stuff goes tomorrow and evaluation goes tomorrow,” Gard said. “I think we’ll know more in 24 hours or so. But obviously he hasn’t rolled that ankle. That’s the other one that’s been – so always when you do that the first time, there’s always an extra amount of pain.”

Winter went down with the injury after an impressive putback basket with 7:01 remaining in the Badgers’ 78-45 win over Maryland.

He appeared to be in significant pain as the UW athletic trainer spent an extended period of time working with him on the court. He was helped off the court and into the tunnel while appearing to not place any weight on his left leg. He did not return to the bench at any point in the game.

Gard said Winter was in “decent spirits” in the locker room and “already doing treatment.”

Any absence for Winter would be especially challenging given the Badgers’ lack of depth in the frontcourt. The only other frontcourt players to average more than 10 minutes per game are Austin Rapp and Aleksas Bieliauskas.

“We’ve played different lineups,” Gard said. “We’ve played small ball. We did some of that tonight. I think Bieliauskas has gotten better. I think, again, the experience of Will [Garlock] as a true five. So we’ll see where we’re at tomorrow and then just take the best path forward.”
