Landon Evans named Dispatch's top regular-season boys basketball player

Dispatch.com readers voted for Pickerington Central's Landon Evans as the regular-season boys basketball player of the year.

The high school boys basketball season has reached the district finals in seven divisions following a strong regular season for central Ohio players.

Seventeen area athletes were featured in a poll to determine the central Ohio regular-season boys basketball player of the year. The votes from Dispatch readers are in, and the winner is Pickerington Central’s Landon Evans.

The 6-foot-5 junior guard is averaging 18.9, points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.7 steals. He was first-team all-district and all-OCC-Buckeye.

Pickerington Central's Landon Evans was voted Dispatch regular-season boys basketball player of the year.

“Landon has had a tremendous season for us,” coach Eric Krueger said. “He gets a lot of attention each game from opponents and has continued to lead our team and become a better player throughout. He is a great scorer but is also unselfish and willing to make the right, winning play. He recently passed 1,000 points for his career. He contributes to our team’s success in multiple ways on the floor, and I continue to ask more from him from a leadership standpoint, which is an area he continues to make strides in.”

Evans (45.8%) rallied on the final day of voting to finish ahead of Westerville North’s Elijah McCree (36.39%).

They were followed by Newark’s Jake Quackenbush (3.79%), Grove City’s Jacob Saxton (2.55%), Pickerington North’s JR Bates (2.45%), Westerville North’s Tony Cornett (1.86%), Columbus Academy’s Jason Singleton (1.65%), Olentangy’s Ty Walburn (1.16%), Reynoldsburg’s Jorden Bowens (0.98%), Centennial’s Angelo Diedalis (0.89%), Africentric’s Joshua Smith (0.6%), Reynoldsburg's Xavier McKinney (0.55%), Hartley’s Jakhi Calloway (0.4%), Hilliard Bradley’s Ben Mirgon (0.38%), Linden-McKinley's Emmanuel Towns (0.28%), Bradley’s Kypton Norris (0.16%) and Walnut Ridge’s Marquis Lucas (0.11%).

All of these players are candidates to make our All-Metro boys basketball team, which will be revealed after the winter sports season concludes and honored during the Central Ohio High School Sports Awards on June 22 at Upper Arlington High School.
