Boston Red Sox young starting pitcher Brayan Bello has a lot to prove this season as the team continues to load up on arm talent.
Bello made two appearances for the Red Sox in Spring Training before taking off to join the DR. He allowed four earned runs on four hits in his first 1 ⅓ innings, and five earned runs in a two-inning outing five days later.
Turns out all the 26-year-old righty needed was a change of scenery as he laid waste to the Detroit Tigers in a Wednesday afternoon exhibition for the DR.
Bello got the start and allowed just one hit in three innings pitched. He walked one batter and struck out two while allowing zero earned runs against the heart of the Tigers' projected lineup.
Bello matched his highest pitch count of the preseason, tossing 42 pitches and 26 strikes.
The outing comes two days after a video emerged of Bello taking coaching points from one of the greatest pitchers to ever step on a Major League Baseball mound, Red Sox legend Pedro Martinez.
Bello’s velocity stayed around the 95 miles per hour range, with very few changeups mixed into his fastball-dominant arsenal.
True pool play began for the World Baseball Classic on Wednesday and will continue all week until the quarterfinalists are announced on March 12.
