Maine's MPA boys basketball season came to a close Saturday with five new state champions crowned.

The Gardiner Tigers got the championship party started Friday night, handing the Yarmouth Clippers a 58-54 defeat in the Class B title game at the Cross Center in Bangor, Maine. The other four games then took place throughout the day on Saturday.

The Easton Bears and the Valley [Bingham] Cavaliers got the day started at the Augusta Civic Center with Valley ultimately prevailing easily in a 77-46 rout for the Class S title. That was followed by the Monmouth Academy Mustangs winning the Class D championship in a 51-41 win over the Machias Bulldogs. Finally, in the nightcap at Augusta, the Fort Kent Warriors claimed the Class C trophy in a 70-63 win over the Maranacook Black Bears.

While the day was playing out for Maine's lower classifications in Augusta, the Portland Bulldogs were taking the court in the evening in their hometown at the Cross Insurance Arena. And while the court wasn't in their usual campus venue, it still played like a homecourt advantage as the Bulldogs cruised past the Camden Hills Windjammers with a dominating 76-60 win for the Class A title.

With Maine's boys basketball championships in the book, attention turns to the state's hockey championships which will conclude next Saturday once again at Cross Insurance Arena in Portland.
