Josip Stanišić fumes over Nico Schlotterbeck tackle during Bayern Munich 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund

As always, the latest edition of Der Klassiker was played with great intensity from Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, with both team’s players fighting the duels hard. During one of those duels in the 20th minute, BVB’s defender Nico Schlotterbeck made a hard tackle against Bayern’s right-back Josip Stanišić, hitting the ball first, but then finding Stanišić‘s shin studs-first with a more-than-reasonable force. Even Schlotterbeck himself admitted that he found it lucky that he was not sent off for the tackle.

After the game, Stanišić agreed with that sentiment, declaring he disagreed with the referee’s decision not to show Schlotterbeck the red card. “I don’t know how the referee decided it wasn’t a red card. Yes he got the ball first, but the red card is there to protect the players. For me it was a clear red and I told the referee that too.”

From his perspective, the refereeing in the Bundesliga has not been consistent in their decisions, referencing an incident with Bayern Munich loanee João Palhinha last season and complaining about Schlotterbeck not having been shown the red card. “We had a similar situation with João Palhinha against Bochum, where he got the ball and then hit the opponent, and he got a straight red – and then we lost that game. I think Schlotterbeck was more than lucky to stay on the pitch today,” the defender stated.
