Hey, They’re Pretty Good: #4 Harvard 19, Marquette 10

It was a hell of a game while the Golden Eagles were jumping out to a 5-1 lead on the Crimson. After that, not so much.

With 6:43 left in the first quarter at Chaminade High School on Long Island, YOUR Marquette Golden Eagles men’s lacrosse team got a third goal of the game from Tucker Mullen and took a 5-1 lead on #4 Harvard. That margin held as the clock went under six minutes to go, then five, then four. The more time that went by without Harvard finding a seam in the MU defense, the more you started to think “hey, clearly Harvard’s going to score a few here, but maaaaaaybe Marquette can make this early advantage walk across the stage for another 50 minutes.”

And right when the clock hit 3:00, Nathan Cobery scored for the Crimson, and it was all over for Marquette.

Cobery’s goal unleashed a 5-0 run from the #4 team in the land, which turned into 9-1, which turned into 14-3. Seven of those 14 goals were scored by Jack Speidell, and he assisted on two more. With less than 90 seconds to go in the third quarter, Marquette was down 15-7, and that was all she wrote for the Golden Eagles. Final score: #4 Harvard 19, Marquette 10, as the Crimson tacked on the final three goals of the game and kept MU scoreless for the final 10:50 juuuuuust to make sure everyone got the point.

Harvard just finished their possessions, it’s as simple as that. By the end, shots were 38-33 favoring Harvard and ground balls were 19-16 favoring Marquette. The Golden Eagles won the faceoff battle on the day as well, getting 18 to 14 for the Crimson, and that item favored Marquette 12-5 at intermission. There’s underlying things to say that MU was right in there battling with Harvard….. but the scoreboard says what it says.

Jake Bair and Carsen Brandt ended up joining Tucker Mullen with all three men recording a hat trick in this game, and Bair had an assist to bump himself to the team lead in points with four. Lucas Lawas went the distance in the cage for Marquette here, making eight saves to do what he could to keep things within screaming distance.

Marquette drops to 2-3 on the year, but all three losses have been against ranked opponents.

Up Next: Marquette will be back in action next week Saturday, and they’ll be back at Valley Fields. Mercer will come to town to be the opponent, and first draw is set for Noon Central time, just 30 minutes after men’s basketball starts against UConn. Who’s making these decisions, I ask you? Mercer is 3-3 on the year right now after taking an 18-7 loss on the road against Drexel on Saturday, and that’s the third straight loss for the Bears.
