Aaron Boone still claims the Yankees are the best team, but their play says otherwise.
Aaron Boone's Hollow Message Falls Flat as Yankees Blow AL East Lead originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Happy Heavenly 95th Birthday to “The Boss,” George Steinbrenner. On this Independence Day, if he were still alive, Steinbrenner would grant Aaron Boone his independence…by firing him from his job as Yankees’ Manager.
After all, “The Boss” always said he wanted to do what was best for the team and the fans and that’s to deliver championships. Well, today, what is best for the team and its fans is for Boone to no longer be the Manager as the players continue to play as if they want their independence from him. The past five weeks and one day are evidence enough of that.
On May 28th, the Bombers held a seven-game lead in the AL East. Now, as they take on the Mets on July 4th, they find themselves in second place, having surrendered their lead and sit a game back of the Toronto Blue Jays.
Boone’s message has remained steadfast, telling his players after being swept by Toronto, “We’re the best team in The League.” Really? “The best team in The League?” Has the definition of “best” changed recently? If not, then there’s no way you can call the Yankees the best team.
The fact of the matter is that they have the second-best record in the AL East, the fourth-best in the entire AL and the eighth-best in the Majors. None of those are “THE BEST.”
It’s one thing for a Manager to remain upbeat and positive while trying to rally his team out of a slump. It’s a whole other thing to willingly turn a blind eye to the truth. This team is nowhere near Boone’s self-declared “The Best” status and hasn’t been in years. There’s only so many times players can hear the same thing before they tune it out as they realize it's not true and they’re at that point now.
The proof is in the pudding, or pie, whichever dessert you prefer.
