Manchester United have received an important boost in their quest to sign Benjamin Sesko, as their main rivals in the race are making progress on an alternative track.

After recruiting Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbuemo, the Red Devils are now primarily focused on landing a new centre-forward who can spearhead the newly-minted attacking trident.

In recent days, United have trimmed down their choices to just two: RB Leipzig’s Sesko and Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins.

While it said that Ruben Amorim is in favour of the England international due to his valuable Premier League experience, the club’s head of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, is orchestrating the onslaught for his former Slovenian pupil.

However, Man Utd found themselves a direct competitor in the race for Sesko, as Newcastle have been equally interested in the 22-year-old’s services, especially with Alexander Isak pushing towards the exit door.

Nevertheless, there have been some positive developments for MUFC on this track, as Fabrizio Romano reveals that Yoane Wissa, another target for Newcastle, has now informed Brentford of his desire to leave the club and play in the Champions League. The Congolese striker is even refusing to train with his teammates in an attempt to prompt a transfer.

Wissa hellbent on joining Newcastle

Moreover, British journalist Ben Jacobs insists that Wissa is keen to join Newcastle who have already made two bids worth £25m and £30m+5m that were turned down by Brentford. Nevertheless, the Magpies are expected to launch another offer, hoping it will prove to be a ‘third time’s a charm’, as was the case with Man Utd and Mbeumo.

If Newcastle were to succeed in their mission and finalise a deal for Wissa, the path would be cleared for United to recruit Sesko, although INEOS still have to raise funds by offloading the deadwood, the likes of Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony
