MLB Rumors: Yankees Battling Red Sox for Ace Pitcher Expected To Be Moved Before 5 PM ET

A new MLB rumor claims the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are among the playoff contenders battling it out for Miami Marlins star Sandy Alcantara.

We are just hours away from the 2025 MLB trade deadline, and the Sox and Yanks are among the various AL teams actively looking to upgrade their roster. They are feeling even more pressure heading into the 5 PM ET deadline after the top team in the division, the Toronto Blue Jays, swung a notable trade on Thursday for 2020 AL Cy Young winner Shane Bieber.

Well, a new report claims the pair of AL East clubs are in the running for a blockbuster trade to land another former Cy Young award winner.

The 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner has been linked to various trades over the last few years. Such is the case with any player who becomes a star for the Marlins. The two-time All-Star was viewed as one of the best pitchers in the game two years ago. However, Tommy John surgery sidelined him for all of 2024. And he has struggled to recapture his once elite form this year.

Heading into the weekend, he has a 6.36 ERA, a whopping 1.422 WHIP, and an 81-42 strikeout-to-walk ratio. However, many MLB scouts feel he is making the necessary adjustments and will regain his previous form eventually.

If the 29-year-old builds momentum heading into September, it would give either the Yankees or Red Sox another ace pitcher in the postseason. Furthermore, he is under team control for two more seasons for just $17 million in 2026, and a $21 million club option in 2027.
