The Oklahoma Sooners didn’t shield Jackson Arnold from scrutiny last season. Instead, the former five-star recruit and current Auburn Tigers quarterback took the brunt of the team’s criticism, was benched for a true freshman, and then had his redshirt burned later in the season. The tough stretch is exactly why he’s cut out for Hugh Freeze’s squad.
Arnold recently revealed how Freeze got a feel for his mettle before he joined him as a transfer.
“He did have us take a personality test,” Arnold said. “I took mine on my official visit one random morning. I don’t know if he used that as a weeding-out tool for the transfer portal, but obviously there was something about it he liked, so, I mean, I do like it for coaching. He wants to see what personalities fit him and his coaching style, and if that fit’s not good, then don’t grab that guy out of the portal, so I can completely understand him doing that.”
On an episode of “Andy & Ari On3,” Andy Staples joked that Freeze was trying to see if Arnold could handle being thrown under the bus.
“I mean, Jackson Arnold got thrown in front of literal buses last year if we’re calling Dylan Stewart a bus,” Staples said.
Arnold detailed his “Welcome to the SEC” moment as standing behind his offensive line and looking across the line of scrimmage at South Carolina’s defensive front. Now dressing for a new program in Auburn, he’ll hope to have better success in the same conference.
