This is a big blow for the Liberty.

The New York Liberty have encountered a roadblock in their quest to defend their championship this season. This comes in the form of a concerning injury for two-time WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart, who has been ruled out of Monday’s matchup against Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings.
Breanna Stewart Suffers Injury Against Los Angeles Sparks
Stewart played less than four minutes on Saturday as the Liberty suffered a tough 101-99 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks at Barclays Center. The 6-foot-4 forward was forced to exit in the first quarter after sustaining a lower leg injury.
In the video below, Stewart can be seen calling for a substitution immediately after seemingly sustaining an injury while running down the court.

Liberty Coach Has Concerning Update on Stewart
New York head coach Sandy Brondello spoke to reporters before Monday’s clash in Dallas, and she revealed that Stewart currently has no timetable to return, via the New York Post’s Medeline Kenney.
This only means that Stewart will likely sit out Wednesday’s marquee matchup against the league-best Minnesota Lynx, who are considered to be one of the biggest threats to the Liberty’s title defense this season.
It is also possible that Stewart will be out for an extended period, especially after Brondello noted that it currently remains unclear what part of her leg is injured.
The seven-time All-Star will likely undergo further tests to determine the extent of the injury, which should reveal how much time she will miss.
Stewart’s Injury a Significant Blow for the Liberty
Stewart has been one of New York’s best players since she joined the team in 2023. This season, the 6-foot-4 forward is averaging 18.3 points on 46.9% shooting, 6.5 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocks, making her one of the frontrunners for this year’s MVP title.
Losing Stewart will be an undeniably huge setback for the Liberty, who just got star center Jonquel Jones back from injury following a nine-game absence. Simply put, there’s just no replacing what Stewart brings to the table for New York, especially if she is required to sit out for an extended period.
The silver lining for the Liberty here is that the timing of Stewart’s injury comes at a relatively ideal time. Entering Monday’s matchup against the Wings, the Liberty are 17-7 and are second in the WNBA. They are virtually a lock for the playoffs, which won’t start until mid-September.
This will give Stewart a one-and-a-half-month window to recover from her injury, if necessary, and be healthy for the postseason.
