Dream returns home, looking to stay hot against Valkyries

The Atlanta Dream (15-10) is back at home on Tuesday night following a pair of impressive wins to close out their road swing. Atlanta knocked off Phoenix and Minnesota as substantial road underdogs to sit alone in second place in the Eastern Conference of the WNBA. MATCHUP NOTES

The Atlanta Dream (15-10) is back at home on Tuesday night following a pair of impressive wins to close out their road swing.

Atlanta knocked off Phoenix and Minnesota as substantial road underdogs to sit alone in second place in the Eastern Conference of the WNBA.

Sunday's 90-86 victory over the Lynx as eight-point road underdogs was a nice revenge spot for the Dream, who lost at home in overtime to Minnesota on June 27.

The Golden State Valkyries (11-13) head to Georgia's capital, looking to bounce back from an embarrassing loss to Connecticut on Sunday.

Although Golden State has exceeded expectations in its first season in the WNBA, the Valkyries looked like an expansion squad in a 31-point rout at the hands of the Sun. Connecticut entered Sunday's matchup owning a dreadful 3-20 record, which was the worst in the league.

The Valkyries have won just three of 12 games played outside the Bay Area this season, while posting a 5-5 record against the spread as a road underdog of five points or more.

HEAD-TO-HEAD MATCHUPS

In the most recent matchup in Atlanta, the Valkyries led the Dream, 26-16 after one quarter. Atlanta stormed back for a 90-81 victory on July 7 to cover as 7.5-point favorites. Guard Allisha Gray led the Dream with 24 points, while center Brittney Griner was held to 11 points.

FIRST QUARTER BETTING TRENDS

The Dream have compiled the best record in the WNBA this season in the first quarter at 18-7. Atlanta is 7-4 at home in the first quarter and have led through 10 minutes in each of the last six games overall.

Golden State owns a 10-14 record in the first quarter, although the Valkyries have covered the spread in 13 of 24 games. The offense has been cold out of the gate for Golden State, scoring 15 points or fewer in each of the past three opening quarters.

BETTING PREDICTION

The Dream are laying eight points at DraftKings, while the total is set at 157.

For as good as Atlanta has been recently, this is an obvious letdown spot following a three-game road trip against tough Western Conference opponents.

Also, it will be the first home game for the Dream since July 7 (also against Golden State), who played three road contests prior to the All-Star break.

Golden State will be motivated after two ugly losses to Dallas and Connecticut as a favorite and now are flipped to an underdog.

Let's take the points with Golden State on Tuesday night.
