The 2025 college football offseason has left many decisions unresolved on the football field. Several teams are hopeful, but until the season begins, it remains unclear if those hopes will materialize.
The Auburn Tigers are hoping their reasons for optimism are realistic. The team is currently experiencing four consecutive losing seasons, the first such streak since 1946-50. Two of these losing seasons have occurred under head coach Hugh Freeze, making this year crucial for him to turn things around.
On "The Paul Finebaum Show," the SEC Network analyst discussed the Oklahoma Sooners' schedule. One of those games is a home game against Auburn, where he revealed his true feelings about the Tigers.
"I think Auburn is a team that I have no earthly idea (about)," Finebaum said.
There is reason to be optimistic that Auburn is re-establishing itself as a legitimate football program. The Tigers finished with the No. 8-ranked transfer portal class and made several key additions, including quarterback Jackson Arnold from Oklahoma and wide receiver Eric Singleton Jr. from Georgia Tech.
Arnold, a former five-star prospect, was a first-year starter last season at Oklahoma. His season was challenging, as the Sooners were missing their top five wide receivers for much of the year and dealt with a banged-up offensive line. Despite these obstacles, he completed the season with 1,421 passing yards, 12 touchdowns, and three interceptions over 10 games.
Singleton Jr. had an impressive season at Georgia Tech, finishing with 754 receiving yards and three touchdowns. He was also ranked among the top five players in the transfer portal.
Freeze has performed commendably in recruiting high school players over the past two seasons, successfully securing back-to-back top 10 classes. In contrast, Auburn managed to land only one top 10 class in the five years before Freeze's arrival. However, this season has seen a decline, with the Tigers ranked No. 70 in recruiting.
Auburn will start its season at 8 p.m. ET on Aug. 29, facing the Baylor Bears in an away game.
