Kalen DeBoer gives hint on who’s leading the QB race after day 1 of fall practice

Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer talks about how each of his QBs looked after day 1 of fall practice.

After Alabama’s first fall practice, most fans want to know is if anyone has taken the lead in the quarterback race.

Kalen DeBoer gave an update on how each of his quarterbacks looked after their first practice, and he seemed to be pleased with the looks of all three QBs Ty Simpson, Austin Mack, and Keelon Russell, as he told the Tuscaloosa News.

"I think they have all taken steps through the summer," DeBoer said. "And you can see they are definitely more comfortable with the install. A lot of it's the reps the get with the play concepts they have. But the footwork, and just the confidence with that, and some of the new things we've added in."

That should make Alabama fans feel good that all three quarterbacks have improved over the summer, but what they really want to know is, has DeBoer picked his starter yet?

"Just the gimme, the ones that should be 100%, making those plays all the time," DeBoer said. "And I felt that (Simpson) did that. He probably got more opportunities just because of the way plays developed to have more of those gimmes. And those gimmes add up. Gimmes are five-yard gains that turn into 15 and 20 and, sometimes, explosives."

While DeBoer praised Simpson, he also had praise for Mack and Russell, whom he said he expects to take the biggest leap between the three.

"Probably Keelon's going to be the one where you are going to see the biggest jump naturally," DeBoer said. "And that was good. He's making quick decisions, not sitting there thinking too much. But I feel all of them did."

With all that said, it sounds like nothing has changed when it comes to who is leading the quarterback race, and that’s Simpson unless something major changes.
