Daulton Varsho is in his third season with the Toronto Blue Jays after making his MLB debut for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2020.

In the 2022 offseason, the Diamondbacks traded Varsho to the Blue Jays in exchange for catcher Gabriel Moreno and outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr.

Since then, the 28-year-old has transitioned to the outfield full-time and established himself as a Gold Glove–caliber defender after spending his early career as a catcher with Arizona.

Over 318 career games in Toronto, Varsho has compiled a .216 batting average, a .695 OPS, 46 home runs and 139 RBIs—figures that his outstanding defense often helps to offset.

Varsho sustained a left hamstring strain while attempting to stretch a double into a triple during a May 31 game against the Athletics.

On Monday, ahead of a series opener against the Baltimore Orioles, manager John Schneider announced that Varsho is expected to return this upcoming weekend and noted that catcher Alejandro Kirk has been doing better.

Kirk was placed on the seven-day concussion injured list on Sunday after being struck in the mask by a foul tip during a game against the Detroit Tigers.

With Varsho set to return before Kirk, the Blue Jays could place him at catcher, opening an extra outfield spot to optimize platoon matchups instead of relying on backup catcher Tyler Heineman, who’s appeared in just 38 games this season.

By contrast, Varsho earned his first Gold Glove Award in the outfield last year, so his defensive presence would be sorely missed—but ultimately, Toronto must decide whether to prioritize offense or defense as the season unfolds.
