City in Miami: A long way from home!

Manchester City and Goal Click collaborated to capture the passion and diversity of the City fanbase in the United States.

As part of our time in the US for the FIFA Club World Cup, we shared the personal stories of City fans across six cities, highlighting the unique ways they support the team.

David is a 17-year-old City fan from Miami with Cuban and Spanish roots. He shares his support with his mom, as they travel to Manchester once a year to cheer on the team in person.

Miami To Manchester

My name is David, and I am 17 years old and live in Miami, FL. Through my parents, I have Cuban roots and a bit of Spanish heritage. In addition to going to school and supporting Manchester City, I also have a side hustle trading Pokemon cards.

I started playing soccer when I was six, then continued through middle school with my school team. In high school, I played for both the Paris Saint-Germain Academy and my school team.

Being a Man City fan has been mostly highs, thanks to how good the team is and that treble win! However, there is not much support for the club around me. I was first drawn to City by Sergio Agüero and Pep Guardiola. 

I got into Man City around 2017 when Pep Guardiola took over. His success at Barcelona and Bayern made it hard not to admire him. Also, Ageero was just so satisfying to watch because he always found the back of the net.

If I could sit down with one City player, it would be Rodri. He is the only central defensive midfielder to win the Ballon d’Or for a reason - he is the backbone of the team, and consistently performs at the highest level. I would ask him for advice to help improve my own game.

Taking The Time

I watch almost every game with my mom because she is the only other soccer fan in the family. Every year, we travel to England together to see City play, and it is always special. Manchester is a long way from home and takes a lot of planning, especially around school breaks and the club’s schedule, so I really appreciate these trips. Every time I am there, it feels surreal to watch them play in person because it is nothing like seeing it on TV.

One of my favourite memories was my first trip to Manchester to watch the UEFA Champions League semi-final against Madrid when City won 4-0 in 2023. The atmosphere was unforgettable - even Madrid players said they had never seen anything like it. It is an experience I will never forget.

It means a lot to me that my mom watches the games with me. Even if she is not always into it, she takes the time to watch with me, and I really appreciate that.
