The righty will miss significant time after undergoing a major surgery.
Cardinals Pitching Prospect Injury Woes Continue with No. 6 Tekoah Roby originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Just days before the MLB Trade Deadline, in which the St. Louis Cardinals are projected to be sellers, yet another pitcher in the team's top 10 prospects has hit the injured list.
Right-handed pitcher Tekoah Roby, the team's No. 6 prospect, underwent Tommy John surgery on Friday, potentially sidelining him until 2027.
The 23-year-old was having a solid year before he went down with injury, carrying a career-low 3.10 ERA through 16 starts with a 7-4 record across Double-A and Triple-A. His 78 1/3 innings pitched was the most Roby has thrown since 2022 when he completed 104 2/3 innings of work.
Roby struck out 87 and walked just 19 batters to pitch to a 1.10 WHIP, his best since 2021. Despite struggling against righties this season, the former 3rd-round pick was making a push for the MLB as early as this season, and now he won't see action for over a year.
The righty joins No. 10Cooper Hjerpe as Cardinals pitching prospects to undergo Tommy John surgery this season and can be added to the long list of injuries to the team's pitching prospects throughout the year.
No. 7Tink Hence remains on 7-day IL - his second IL stint this season - and No. 2Quinn Mathews has spent time on the list, as well. With major injuries to Roby and Hjerpe, and lingering issues with Hence, it's no wonder the team drafted 12 college pitchers earlier this month.
Aside from Mathews, the Cardinals most reliable remaining pitching prospect is No. 11Ixan Henderson, who was unranked in the team's top 30 to start the year. The 23-year-old lefty is tearing it up with Springfield, carrying a 2.37 ERA through 17 appearances with 96 strikeouts in 91 innings pitched. Henderson is certainly a candidate for a promotion to Triple-A in wake of Roby's extended absence.
