"Sometimes it's about winning the match, not about how you play," Zverev said after the match. "I hadn't played for four weeks, took a break that I needed. I'm happy to be in the third round."
Zverev is the number one seed at the Toronto masters after world number one Jannik Sinner and number two Carlos Alcaraz pulled out of the tournament shortly before its start. The German had a bye in the first round.
This is Zverev's return to the ATP Tour after the 28-year-old took a break from competition following his first round exit at Wimbledon a month ago.
During this time, he spent 10 days training at the Mallorca academy of former great Rafael Nadal.
In other action, Daniil Medvedev took down Dalibor Svrcina 7-6 (7-3), 6-4. The world number 14 will next face Australia's Alexei Popyrin, who defeated Canada's Nicolas Arseneault 7-6 (9-7), 6-3.
Hometown hero Denis Shapovalov suffered a shock exit after being defeated by 19-year-old American Learner Tien 7-6 (7-4), 7-5.
Third seed Lorenzo Musetti defeated Australia's James Duckworth, while fifth seed Holger Rune beat Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard to advance to the third round.
