The PGA Tour heads to Pebble Beach this week, drawing attention to the most iconic peninsula in all of golf.
The Monterey Peninsula is home to two legendary golf courses on the Californian coast: Pebble Beach and Cypress Point.
Pebble Beach is one of the most famous public courses in the world. If you have the money, anyone can book a tee time. It is a bucket-list destination that stays busy year-round, with green fees costing around $600.
Meanwhile, Cypress Point, just two miles down the road, is the opposite. It is ultra-private. There is no website, no public tee times, and no pro shop open to the street. To play there, you must be invited and accompanied by one of its roughly 250 members. It is one of the hardest tee times to get in golf.
A legendary architect sculpted Cypress Point into the West Coast. Dr. Alister MacKenzie, who also designed Augusta National, is responsible for creating this masterpiece. And after playing it recently, Michael Kim revealed what he thinks about the golf course.
Michael Kim shares honest thoughts about Cypress Point
Kim has one of the most engaging social media accounts of any pro athlete, as he constantly gives incredible insight into the life of a pro golfer.
And after playing Cypress Point, he gave the inside scoop on what it’s like to play the course. Kim posted to X: “Thoughts from Cypress Point:
“-Cypress Point Club is AWESOME
“-Easily top 5 course I’ve ever played. It’s a slightly shorter more fun and exciting course compared to Pebble. The greens are super undulating as a typical Mackenzie design. Some really small pockets and tiers that make for super fun shots where like Augusta, you can play away from pins to roll it closer.
“-The three distinct styles of trees, dunes, ocean all have unique shapes and designs. The massive dunes especially made the course visually great and also a unique challenge
“-I got to see two different sides of Cypress. It was beautiful and calm for the front nine and then it got WINDY starting on 11… like golf ball not staying on green windy.
“-The members that hosted me were awesome to play with and great people. Had lunch overlooking the 16th hole and the ocean. What a day.
“-If I could only play one course for the rest of my life, I’m pretty sure it’d be Cypress Point.”
That’s high praise from a man who has played Augusta National and the other great golf courses around the world. We can only dream of having the experience that he just had.
Michael Kim shares thoughts on Pebble Beach ahead of PGA Tour event
Despite saying that Cypress Point was the better golf course, Kim heaped praise on Pebble Beach the day before.
Ahead of his appearance in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, he posted to X: “There truly aren’t that many courses in the world that get me in my feelings anymore. It’s way more about how my game is feeling, what golf shots I need to hit and how to shoot the lowest scores.
“But there are select ones that bring out emotions.
“Pebble, [Augusta National], awesome links courses. It just is really cool here.
“(At least when the weather is good at Pebble… ocean looks like a monster when the weather turns bad which is possible this Sunday)”
As a spectator we’d love to see some weather challenges to test the best players on the planet, so let’s see what the weekend brings!
